A distribution center operating 40 dock doors, a yard with 200 trailer positions, and a conveyor and sortation system processing 15,000 packages per hour is generating sensor data at a rate that would saturate a typical facility network connection many times over — even before accounting for the video feeds from security and operations cameras. The assumption embedded in many early IoT deployment architectures — that all this data would be sent to the cloud, processed centrally, and acted upon from a central platform — was always more aspirational than practical. The physics of latency, the economics of data transmission, and the operational reality of time-critical logistics decisions all argue for a different architecture: one where computation happens at the edge, close to the data source, and only the processed results and exception signals travel to the cloud.
The Challenge
The cloud-first IoT architecture made sense when IoT deployments were sparse — a few sensors on critical assets, transmitting low-frequency telemetry for monitoring and alerting. It struggles when IoT deployments become dense and time-critical. Connectivity dependency is the third problem. A cloud-dependent IoT architecture fails completely when the facility's internet connection is degraded or unavailable. In a logistics operation that relies on IoT-driven automation for dock scheduling, conveyor control, and safety enforcement, a 30-minute internet outage cannot be allowed to halt operations. Edge architectures provide local processing continuity regardless of WAN connectivity state.

Facility edge nodes handle video analytics (object detection, person/forklift proximity analysis, dock occupancy monitoring), time-series aggregation and anomaly detection from environmental and equipment sensors, local WMS and YMS integration for operational event correlation, and the business logic that determines which events require immediate local action versus cloud transmission.
The facility edge node is the hub of the edge architecture. It runs a local message broker (MQTT or Apache Kafka in edge configuration) that ingests sensor streams from the device tier, a stream processing engine (Apache Flink or Spark Streaming) that applies detection and aggregation logic, and a local operational database that maintains current state for all monitored assets. All time-critical control responses originate from the facility edge node — the cloud is not in the critical path for any operational action.
Cloud Integration and Data Tiering
The facility edge node communicates with the cloud for non-time-critical functions: transmitting aggregated telemetry summaries (temperature logs, equipment health scores, throughput metrics) at hourly or daily intervals, syncing exception events (safety incidents, equipment alarms, significant deviations from operational norms) in near-real time, and uploading video clips associated with exception events for review and audit. This tiered communication pattern reduces cloud data transmission by 90–97% compared to a cloud-first architecture while preserving all the analytical value in the enterprise data environment.
In-transit monitoring for over-the-road and intermodal shipments uses a similar edge pattern. Cellular-connected IoT gateway devices (trailer telematics units, cargo sensors) perform local processing — detecting door open/close events, temperature excursions, shock events, and geofence crossings — and transmit only event-triggered data rather than continuous telemetry. When an edge node detects that a trailer has been positioned at a dock door (via camera analytics or dock sensor), it should immediately trigger an availability notification to the YMS and dock scheduling system — reducing the manual check-in process that currently adds 10–20 minutes of dwell time to every trailer movement. Building a logistics technology architecture that assigns each workload to the right computing tier — and connects the tiers effectively — is the discipline that separates edge-enabled operational excellence from both cloud-only architectures that cannot meet latency requirements and on-premises-only architectures that cannot scale.
